How to easily get rid of soap scum?

By | November 11, 2020

If you have a bathtub then you can understand how annoying soap scum is! If I have to be honest, I am guilty of postponing cleaning my bathtub even when it’s dirty simply because I hate this cleaning chore! It consumes way too much of my time and I am not a fan of scrubbing for hours.

However, this is a bad habit which I am trying to get rid of. How? By trying out different cleaning methods and different cleaners in order to find the one thing that works and will transform this time-consuming task into an easy cleaning chore.

Did I succeed?

Well, YES! All my life I had been using commercial bathtub cleaners which to be quite honest with you have never really worked that great.

Then I decided to start trying out different natural ingredients people often use when cleaning their homes. Then I came across a DIY recipe for a bathtub cleaner which specifically targets soap scum and I decided to give it a try. It looked so simple yet I had never even thought of mixing these ingredients together. Did it work? Yes, it did. That is why I decided to make this dedicated article so that you can try it out as well!

What you need?

You need to prepare 6 ingredients – baking soda, washing soda, salt, castile soap (liquid), essential oil, and hydrogen peroxide.

Grab a small bowl and mix 1/2 cup of baking soda, 1/2 cup of washing soda, and 1/4 cup of the salt. Then add the liquid soap and stir. You need to create a paste. Then, add the essential oil of your choice (5-10 drops) and 2 tablespoons of the hydrogen peroxide.

How to use it? You need to get a sponge, apply some of the mixture on it, and coat the bathtub with it. Let it sit for a few minutes so that the mixture can soften the soap scum and all the impurities then start scrubbing. I know I previously said I hate scrubbing – and I do, however, with this paste you don’t need to apply that much elbow-grease and scrubbing out the impurities and soap scum is quite easy.

When you are done make sure you rinse the bathtub!
